BIRTHDAY Martin Luther King, Jr. An American clergyman, Dr. King became a vibrant activist and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Born: 1/15/29 in Atlanta, GA Assassinated: 4/4/68 at the age of 39 in Memphis, TN while supporting a strike action by African- American sanitation workers. By the time of his death, Dr. King had become a hero to people of all racial and cultural groups. Thanks to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, his birth is commemorated as a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January each year.
